Updated Response At no stage before the day of the hearing were we told that our case would only be heard by a community magistrate. We were under the impression — especially given the serious immigration consequences — that seeing a judge was possible and likely, and we were never told otherwise until the last minute. That lack of communication was deeply disappointing. While we understand no lawyer can guarantee success, telling us you hadn’t lost a similar case in four years gave us a strong impression that this would be straightforward and highly likely to succeed. That definitely shaped our expectations when we decided to proceed and spend $9,000. As for the appeal, you offered it at a "discounted" rate of $5,000 — which is still a significant cost. After doing my own research and consulting with another lawyer, I found that appeals like ours have only about a 25% success rate unless new evidence or strong legal arguments are introduced. When I asked you about your approach, you said there wouldn’t be any new arguments, but still estimated a 60% chance of success. Faced with that cost and uncertainty, I think most people would make the same decision I did.
