I came here because I saw the name driving past. Idly is not often offered in other Indian restaurants in New Zealand. When I entered I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was the only non Indian in the place, (which is always a good sign in my opinion) and a buffet was set up for lunch. When I asked one of the team members they explained what all the different dishes and sauces were. Everyone was super friendly. After a sampling round I had two more servings. I especially enjoyed the dosas which were being made to order. Delicious.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here.

Good spot for South Indian food.
We tried Dosa and the kids ate idly, it was prepared fresh. The staff was very warm and helpful.
We also drank coffee, which was not a traditional filter coffee but it was good.
Good spot to enjoy Dosas.

Absolutely fantastic experience! The food was rich in flavor and authenticity, exactly what you’d hope for in an Indian restaurant. As someone who values traditional taste over just aesthetics, this place truly delivers. While the presentation wasn’t overly fancy, the quality and taste of the dishes more than made up for it. Great service topped it all off. Highly recommend and will definitely return!

When people think of South Indian food, the first (and only) thing that comes to mind is idly and sambar, maybe dosa.
Although the crowd favourite there is so much more diversity to South Indian cuisine and this is what the owner of the restaurant "Idly Sambar" want to drive home. Providing access to a diverse range of good South Indian food.
The restaurant is situated in Kingsland, which is centrally located and a little bit outside of the city hubbub. Parking is limited and charged Frankly I was not impresses by that at all!
It is a good sized venue with several industrial fans to help keep the place cool.
I specifically went for the unlimited Andhra Thali. It is unlimited and served table side I had to wait quite long for the first thali to come, about 20 minutes ⏳️ but the replacements came within a minute of my asking.
Usually I don't care much for rice but this rice was fluffy and delicious. Their sambar was out of this world and I had four bowls! The dal was tasty. I also liked their mixed veg curry and had two bowls. The halwa was velvety and melted in my mouth ✨️ It wasn't too sweet, which Indian desserts sometimes tend to be. The roti was a bit thicker and the tempura fried veg was a great accompaniment.
The bowls are quite small. I guess it's to reduce wastage, and it doesn't matter much, since it is unlimited
I wish that the staff would have come and asked me if I wanted anything more, instead of my having to try and grab their attention when they walked ♂️ past. That would have elevated the experience.
It is simple food, simply made After eating you don't have that heavy feeling. You feel satiated and satisfied ❤️

I visited Idly Sambar for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by their anniversary promotion offering an unlimited buffet for $10. Overall, I had a good experience. Some dishes stood out with very good taste, such as Veg Korma, Manchurian, Jackfruit Biryani, and Peanut Chutney, which were very flavorful. Other items like Veg Noodles, Masala Dosa, Plain Dosa, Suji Halwa, and Idly were good but could be very good on the next dining experience. I think I should not expect more at $10. I appreciate the variety and value for money and look forward to visiting again. Overall I am happy and recommend every to visit Idly sambar to taste the southern part of India cuisine.

I recently visited Idly Sambar South Indian Restaurant, and I must say, the experience was outstanding! The food was absolutely amazing. The Dahi Puri was incredibly delicious, bursting with flavour. As for the dosas, they were perfectly crisp and served with a variety of tasty chutneys and sambar. Each bite was a delight! The service was friendly and efficient, adding to the overall great dining experience. Highly recommend this place to anyone craving authentic South Indian cuisine – definitely a 5-star experience!
