Customer Reviews
The food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. I especially loved the prawn taco (Gobernador) and the pulled pork taco (Cochinita Pibil) — they were my favorites. The beef and lamb tacos were a bit too greasy for my taste. The Mayan fries and the corn chips with guac were incredibly tasty — totally addictive!

This place was amazing, I have to come back again. The starters filled me up that I didn’t get to have any mains or desserts. Heaps of flavours and cocktails to die for. Very authentic food and highly recommended. Mexican wings yum and jalapeño poppers set fire to your mouth. Will definitely be back.

What a great little spot! We have just recently moved to a nearby suburb and we had taken a walk up Mt.Albert and found this spot on our walk home/ to find lunch.

We had a lovely quick lunch here, chicken tacos and beef birria dorados. Everything was great.

Came here for a dinner with some girlfriends and as usual this place did not disappoint. The restaurant has such a cool vibe and the service is fantastic. The bartender even came to our table to ask for our opinions on the cocktails we ordered which were great! The food was also very tasty. I ordered the birria tacos which I would highly recommend.

Customer Reviews
I had the crispy mushrooms Dorado’s and Caesar salad, and both dishes were absolutely delicious, fresh, perfectly seasoned, and full of flavor. The highlight for me was definitely the cinnamon churros for dessert warm & crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and just the right amount of sweetness.

What made the experience even better was the service. Our waiter was incredibly well-trained, attentive, and genuinely interested in our feedback. It’s always great when staff check in and actually care about your dining experience. The service was also impressively quick, no long waits, just good food and good vibes.

Visited the newly renovated Mexico with a friend on a busy Friday, and the place just kept filling up as the afternoon went on. Despite the rush, the service was flawless—every staff member was attentive, and not once did the hostess seem overwhelmed. It was a complete transformation from my last visit before the renovation, when the space felt empty and lifeless. The difference was like night and day.

Now, onto the real stars: the food and drinks. We stuck with their margaritas, and they didn’t disappoint. As for the food, we tried their famous fried chicken, but it fell a little short of expectations. Surprisingly, the standout dish of the night was the Crispy Mushroom & Cactus Taco—completely unexpected and absolutely delicious. Who knew a vegetarian taco could be that good? I could’ve easily eaten five more.

We also tried a few other dishes and wrapped up with churros for dessert. While tasty, the churros were a bit too sweet. But honestly, nothing could top that taco! I’d go back just for that and a few margaritas.

Highly recommended by the locals. I am glad to visit this place at lunchtime. It was busy and created good vibes. Services are amazing and friendly. Good selection of drinks.
The food was so fresh, it came out very quickly. Reasonable price too. I love pork tacos. The pork was so tender and melted in your mouth. We ordered a combination of pork, chicken and fish. I tried the mixed platter with prawns. Highly recommend. Please give it a try!

Arrived late for dinner, straight from the airport and had only 10 minutes to order food, however the lovely Xuxa sat us down and made the best margaritas we’ve had for years, which more than made up for the hasty food order rushed in before the kitchen closed.
The food was excellent we had tacos.
The pork belly was moist with a slight star anise flavour and the crispy crackling skin gave a fantastic texture.
Beef birra with pico de gallo was presented in a bowl with a beautiful gravy.
The Cajun blackened fish taco was well balanced and the prawn tostada was incredibly good.
Three perfect margaritas later and for a Tuesday night the whole experience was tremendous.

Nice views with a little rustic feel. The stairs can be daunting in a long dress and place usually gets quite crowded. We were lucky to get a spot without reservation around closing time. It was more of a late night snack but there were other options if you needed more. Mocktails and prawns were yummy.

The OG Mexican Restaurant in Victoria St for decades. Visited recently after a long hiatus. Thought was closed down..but still operating. The food is decent and suggest stay on the authentic Mexican dishes. I had the fish which had a bit of a fishy smell. For desserts the churros was below bar..but the brownie was good.Otherwise a decent Mexican dishes and atmosphere. From my knowledge this place has been operating from the 80s.

I’ve dined at The Mexican Cafe so many times in the past 25+ years but admittedly today was the first time in about 2 years since I’d been. 20 years ago, this place was bustling on any given night. Service was quick and efficient. The food was plentiful and packed with flavour. The energy in the place was high. Tonight it was flat. From the moment we reached the top of the stairs the restaurant felt flat. It was 4 min until a server approached us to seat us. We were told the balcony was full so we had to take a table inside opposite the bar. I love that the decor had never changed. I hope it stays that way.
I ordered the vegan quesadilla only to be told there is no vegan cheese despite the menu saying vegan cheese is included. The cost was $30 but no discount was offered. Eventually the server went to the kitchen to ask what is used in place of cheese and the chef offered extra guacamole. I ordered a low alcohol Heineken only to be told they are now not available despite it being listed on the drinks menu. The food came out quickly but I’ve not had a quesadilla like this before. It looks more like a soft taco. Not a lot of flavour and the taco itself was chewy and stale. Good size portion however. My partner had a lamb and a chicken quesadilla. He said the lamb was very good but the chicken was average in flavour. There was minimal staff on. 1 bar staff, 2 servers for the entire restaurant including FOH and 2-3 in the kitchen. We dined at around 7:30pm on a Thursday.
There was no paper towels in the ladies bathroom. Overall, I’m sad this iconic Auckland restaurant seems to have lost its oomph.

If you want Mexican food, come here.

From the colourful and vibrant decor and ambience, to the food, it does exactly what you want from a Mexican restaurant.

They have an extensive Tequila menu, and all of classic menu items you want when you go out for a Mexican meal.

Had the quesadilla. The chicken one was lovely, the pork one equally so. Good flavours, good size.

This is what you want from a decades old establishment that is not sitting back on its heels.

You’ll likely spot the owner wandering about keeping an eye on things, be sure to say hello and if you’re lucky you’ll get an anecdote to go with your meal

I was really looking forward to dining at Mexican Cafe with a friend visiting from Wellington, but unfortunately, our experience wasn’t great.
Food lacked flavours
We requested for bottled habanero or tobasco, but were served a spicy salsa (made by a server) and charged $5 for it at the checkout. We found this misleading and poor.
The table was so sticky that tissue won’t come off. Poor cleanliness!!!!

While I understand that every restaurant has off days, this visit did not leave a positive impression. Hope management takes this feedback into consideration to improve the experience for future customers.
At this stage, I cannot recommend this place! ☹️

Well decorated with acceptable service, but the food had almost no flavor. The sauce tasted mostly like straight tomatoes and lacked what I would consider to be mexican flavor. The margarita I had had no alcohol or tequila flavor and tasted more like lemonade than anything else.

We finally got around to trying Broke Boy Tacos after seeing it all over social media and hearing good things from mates. The first thing I noticed was the simplicity of the menu. Simple, and done well. We got four tacos between the two of us, and we were more than satisfied.

Yes, it’s messy, but that’s half the fun. The seasoning was fantastic. I’m usually not a fan of coriander, but the way it paired with the citrus here made for a surprisingly full flavour. The frozen margarita machine was down when we visited, so I’ll be back to give that a go next time. Definitely worth visiting if you’re overwhelmed by the huge menus you might find in other places. A streamlined taco experience that gets my vote.

Drawn in by the hype, we definitely had high expectations. The staff were lovely and aesthetically the food and the atmosphere was top notch. However, the food flavors were very one note (and very salty). We twisted there was sour cream or salsa with the taco and the ramen. The tacos were also super greasy. All in all not a bad taco but not my favorite either. Also super sad they don’t do frozen margaritas anymore! The beer was good.

We were excited to try Broke Boy Tacos. Unfortunately they missed the mark BIG TIME.
We ordered the 3 tacos (for $22 – we thought this was a reasonable price for 3) and a chips and guac for $12.
When opening the tacos there were only 2 there and as this was a takeaway order we were unable to go back as we were already home – flavor of the tacos is ok loved the dipping sauce!
Really disappointed in the serving size of the chips and guac especially at a price point of $12 to have a couple of handfuls of chips isn’t really worth getting them unless you’re feeding 1 person. Guac does taste lovely.
Glad we took a chance to try and see what all the fuss is about but we won’t be back hence the low score.

Would recommend this place to support local and get a great treat of a meal.

This taco bar keeps it simple, and that’s precisely its strength. The menu is streamlined – essentially, one star player: the slow-cooked pork taco. Forget the sides; this taco is so good, it’s a meal in itself. The pork is incredibly tender and flavorful, leaving you happily licking your fingers clean. If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying, and undeniably delicious meal, look no further. This place delivers on flavour and value.

After a few visits, I’m definitely convinced; the food and general vibe is great. I’ve had that same omg this is too good, after the first bite; every time I’ve visited. I recommend adding cheese to the tacos as well as the sour cream, also don’t skip out on the salsa. If you’re not one to wait, pop in on the off peak times; this place is always packed!

Drinks, food, and especially service was amazing!

Went one day and got served on the bar by Carolina and Jordie loved their espresso martinis! Went a second time on a Friday and was served by Taghi, Juan and then Geo and Penny later on in the night – real friendly and attentive service from them too with the best margaritas in the day and beer pours at night

The monster nachos were huge and perfect for sharing!

Edit: Went a month later and was served by Reevie and Mia – exceptional service on the deck despite also taking care of a function inside!!

Absolutely delicious! Although at first we were concerned about a $39 price tag for nachos, the quantity and quality quantifies it. It truly could be a meal for 2 or a nice side dish for 4. We had the Beef Monster Nachos and no regrets. Everything we had though was delicious and the staff were super attentive. The ambience was also really nice and we enjoyed our date night treat. 10/10 recommend.

Literally rocked up here on a Sat (early evening) because the music at Dr Rudi’s was lame and boy was I surprised that the (very young looking) DJ was playing the music my friends and I love so we had a good time soaking up the vibes over our drinks. Didn’t have a table booked but I’d recommend doing so if you’re wanting to be seated at a particular time and for a particular occasion. Great location with sea views, food was amazing, shared a giant Monster Nacho with my older brother and we loved it. We had the beef nachos and the beef was tender, home made corn chips, loaded with cheese and toppings served inside a huge crunchy Taco Shell. We also tried the 1/2 chicken quesadilla & that was cheesy and yummy too. My older brother tried the beef taco and said it was very flavorful too. It is a popular open place in the Viaduct, can sit inside or outside in the shaded canopy, music was also playing which sets the mood for diners to enjoy. The service was also great & will be back again when in need of a huge monster nacho fix.

One of the best Mexican food spots in Auckland. The location is a bit out of the way and inconspicuous, hidden amongst an industrial area near the motorway on-ramp, but what you’ll find is the most delicious authentic tacos. I make my way here every time I crave tacos, burritos or quesadillas as it’s worth it every time.

Run by Mexicans and decorated in a way that transports you straight to a taquería in a neighborhood of Mexico City, you’ll find genuine flavors and traditional dishes made with passion. From tacos to aguas frescas, every bite is an authentic experience. The place is small, but its cozy atmosphere and the warmth of the people make it absolutely worth the visit.

Pretty decently priced and serving size. Shocked how tasty everything was, will need to return with a bigger appetite next time! Very authentic, unlike any other Mexican place I’ve been to.

What an awesome gem of a spot! Authentic and casual dining. Best Mexican I’ve had in Auckland. I got the Horchata + taco combo. The cactus was bitey, the brisket was savoury and lamb was tender. The salsa was legit

Honestly, nothing comes closer to the real home cooked Mexican meals than this place. We absolutely love their nachos, chicken or beef, we simply rotate when we are craving it. Food tastes fresh as always and the guacamole is always on point (we always add it in). Happy to support this family run business as they are friendly with fast service regardless of busy times. Come on through! Always worth it.

We had dinner at Frida Cocina Mexicana at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. The setting is casual and unpretentious — more of a laid-back lunch spot, but it worked fine for a relaxed evening meal. Service was friendly and very quick, which we appreciated. The frozen margarita was refreshing, and the food was tasty and came out fast. Overall, it’s a nice place if you’re looking for a simple, quick, and satisfying Mexican meal in a central location.

Prime location, food is so so. Suitable for work gather or groups. It’s a little pricey but understandable due to location rent and costs etc but you will be sitting right in front of water which is nice. I won’t go into detail about the food because it’s somewhere between acceptable and not bad…, will leave it to your own judgment.

My go to Mexican restaurant in Auckland! I am originally from Texas where Mexican food is amazing so it’s really difficult to impress me but Frida tastes amazing every time! I usually get their carnitas tacos. They are also the only place I’ve found so far that actually has a margarita machine! Love their frozen watermelon margaritas. Only thing that I don’t enjoy there is their rice, but that’s fine by me!

Food was amazing, coming from Latin America and living in Australia this is so far one of the best Mexican restaurants in this side of the world I have tried. The pork belly was beautifully cooked and birria tacos were made with corn as promised. Actually quite surprised it doesn’t have better reviews, maybe people is not used to authentic Mexican cuisine and are more into the tex mex stuff???

In summarise the food did not convince me. That staff was very friendly, it was fast to serve, the location is very nice. But because this is a restaurant and food matters, I can not give more than 3 stars.

Went here with a colleague for dinner while we were in Auckland for work. I enjoy Mexican so we thought we would give this place a try. Lovely staff – all really attentive. The wine was nice and we got served a lot of food the price really – however the flavour did lack a little for a Mexican restaurant if I’m honest. I did enjoy mine to an extent, it was all fresh and served very quickly which was good – but I likely wouldn’t dine here again unfortunately. Located in a great spot for people watching though and the cocktails did look good!

As a Mexican, this tacos are good but not the best.
The tortillas were way too thick.
Salsa was good, pretty spicy.
The only thing I don’t like is the fact that you can only order three tacos and this have to be the same, you can’t mix as we normally would in Mexico.
Service was great, they were very helpful.
Overall I do recommend them but there’s thing that could improve.

Overall this is a great place for tacos. I definitely recommend the carnitas because the flavor and the salsa verde are perfection. The barbacoa was a close second, and carne asada third. I found the birria to be just okay, and the chicken was my least favorite as it didn’t seem to have flavor. The chorizo is probably the spiciest thing on the menu, if you love spicy!

I enjoyed the horchata here. I also love that they participate in taco Tuesdays, so you can get a discount on Tuesday!

5 stars for Taco Tuesday deals, and food was great but they could include the matcha sauce/hot sauces with the tacos wouldve been better. I’m not a fan of the double tortilla but some prefer it as it’s more filling. Horchata was not too bad either. Awesome service from the two girls who were there.

Absolutely loved our visit to Flying Burrito Brothers Newmarket! The atmosphere was vibrant but still relaxed, and the staff were friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived.
The food was packed with flavour everything tasted fresh and tasty. The tacos were a standout, especially the pulled pork and chicken options, and the guacamole was fresh and delicious. The cocktails were also really well made and complemented the meal perfectly.
Service was quick and attentive and the team made sure we were well looked after the whole time.
Great find for dining or a night out with friends. We’ll definitely be coming back!

A very classy authentic Mexican restaurant. A warm welcoming, followed by an excellent service, with a lot of attention to details on order to please you.
I took at first a Nachos, the beef was excellent. With that I took a glass of the local red wine. Somewhat surprising, it does not taste like anything I have already drunk, but I kinda liked it.
Then I took chicken Fajita with house made Chipotle sauce (!). No word to say that it was awesome.
The service always with a smile and very patient with us.
Conclusion, if you have the opportunity to go eat there, do not hesitate !

Very disappointed with the experience. We were served churros that were clearly undercooked—doughy and raw in the middle. When we politely raised this with the staff, they refused to acknowledge any issue and insisted they were “perfectly fine.” D we were charged the full amount with no apology or resolution. Poor customer service and zero accountability. Won’t be coming back.

Really disappointed with the food. Came here in the weekend and had the guacamole, fried chicken tacos and pulled pork quesadillas. The food was bland, not flavourful and it seemed like they were made from old ingredients from the night before. Both my partner and I did not enjoy the food. I absolutely love Mexican food but I would have to say this is the worst Mexican food I’ve ever had. Would not come here again sorry.

How wonderful it is to find your new favourite restaurant. From the moment we entered the welcoming and warm vibe was apparent. We were seated in the group tables at the back that are vibrantly decorated and gives a taste of Mexico. The servers were absolutely amazing, a great asset to the restaurant. They are professional and very personable. The food was exquisite, you can really taste all the wonderful flavours and spices. Would definitely recommend the fajitas! It comes out on a sizzling skillet and is definitely a show stopper. Amazing restaurant that ticks all the boxes!

BAHA Betty was an awesome spot for our big group catch-up! We had a party of 12 and the space was perfectly set up to accommodate us comfortably, which made the night even better.

I ordered the Birria Tacos and personally thought they were absolutely delicious—packed with flavour and nice and juicy. My wife thought the taste was a little different to what she’s used to, but that might just come down to personal preference. Either way, they were definitely a standout dish for me.

The vibe of the whole place was fantastic—fun, lively, and welcoming—with a really cool atmosphere that made it feel like a genuine night out. The staff were super accommodating too, making sure we were all looked after, even with such a big group.

One thing I’m definitely keen on for next time is trying the ribs, which looked absolutely generous and mouth-watering when my friends ordered them!

All in all, BAHA Betty is a great place for Mexican food lovers, especially if you’re coming with a larger group and want a fun, relaxed experience. Can’t wait to come back and sample more of the menu!

We came to Baha Betty when they first opened and we’ve been meaning to come back since. This time, however, some of the food we had was subpar. I thoroughly enjoyed the Buffalo Wings, you simply cannot go wrong with this spicy and tangy dish. The best dish we ordered tonight was the fish taco, every bite was full of intense flavour. The concept for the other dishes we ordered would have been spectacular, but this was unfortunately not executed. My main issue with tonight’s meal was the horrendously fishy tuna found in both dishes- the raw market fish and the niçoise salad. I completely understand that fish is meant to be a little fishy, but this was an unfathomable and unacceptable level of fishy. I can only compare this ammonia taste with that of a century egg (search it up and give it a try). Otherwise, the salad would have been a hit. The raw fish was also questionable in terms of flavour and texture. I didn’t see a connection with the sauce and the seaweed salad- slimy on slimy is not a go. The Steak Po’ Boy was underwhelming- the bread was not the right pairing, and was quite soggy. Subjectively, it had too much mayonnaise. The Loaded Fries were quite delicious and the menu definitely wasn’t lying when it said LOADED. I hate when I order loaded fries, but when I get to the middle it’s just plain fries. Fortunately, this was not the case. What would elevate the dish is to incorporate a second type of cheese, such as cheddar. The mozzarella used gave it the perfect stringy texture, but it lacked the flavour.
