Janet is a fantastic speech therapist. Super knowledgeable but, most importantly, she really gets to know your child and genuinely cares about them and their development. Janet’s one-on-one sessions definitely helped my son make progress with his speech and the ongoing games at home were fun and enjoyable.

As a New Zealand registered psychologist with over twenty years of experience supporting children with additional needs, I have worked with many professionals in the field. Janet stands out as a truly exceptional speech and language therapist. My child, who started therapy at a very young age, made remarkable progress under Janet’s care over the course of two years.

Janet has a unique ability to deeply engage young children, making each session not only productive but also incredibly enjoyable. She used interactive games that captured my child’s attention and made learning fun, ensuring that my child was always motivated and eager to participate and attend the sessions.

Her expertise in assessing my child’s needs and targeting her interventions with precision was evident from the start. Janet consistently applied evidence-based practices that were both powerful and effective, and she meticulously monitored my child’s progress to ensure that the therapy was effective.

The activities she provided for us to do at home were thoughtfully designed, easy to implement, and equally enjoyable for my child. This seamless integration of therapy into our daily routine significantly contributed to my child’s progress.

Janet is, without a doubt, highly specialized in her field. Her approach is both professional and insightful, and I cannot recommend her services highly enough for anyone seeking exceptional speech and language therapy for their child.

We are so grateful for Finding Voices and especially for Miss Catherine, who has been such a blessing to our family. My daughter, Stellar Ski, felt safe, supported, and seen during every session—and that made all the difference.

Catherine’s patience, warmth, and dedication helped us understand Stellar’s needs better and gave us the confidence to support her journey. It wasn’t just therapy—it was a partnership filled with compassion and genuine care.

Thank you, Finding Voices, for being part of our child’s growth. And to Miss Catherine—thank you for your kindness, your heart, and for helping us find our little girl’s voice.

We have had three speech therapists over the years of our boy’s journey to full communication. One was okay, one couldn’t adapt to our boy, and then there was Finding Voices’ Amy. Amy has got to be one of the most skilled & consummate professionals we have ever dealt with.

The key to her success is her ability to listen & shift her ideas & approach as required. This might seem simple, but we have found that many professionals think their speciality has all the answers. They then apply it regardless of its utility in a given circumstance.

Amy is warm & open and loving, as well as a great speech therapist. Our boy can’t wait to “play with Amy” & we love the improvements we see. Thank you for being ‘Awesome Amy’

Kidz Therapy has been a valuable resource for our family as we responded to our child’s learning needs. His Educational Assessment was given in a professional and age appropriate manner. We have been fortunate enough to work with a Speech Language Therapist at Kidz Therapy to work through the recommendations provided by the assessment.

Marie and all her colleagues that we have worked alongside have been supportive and knowledgeable every step of the way.

I would highly recommend Kidz Therapy to anyone looking to support their children in any aspect of their learning.

The Kidz Therapy staff are all very good at what they do, and come highly recommended. The parent information on offer is very helpful, whether readings or information sessions. Kidz Therapy, run by Marie Kelly is terrific. Short seminars run at convenient times; and weekend courses (2-4 hours) run at different times – suits our family’s random needs. Both psychological and educational assistance is easy to access here – from trustworthy professionals. Our children have widely varying needs and all of them have benefitted over the years with a boost to their learning or other needs….some younger tutors for the teens has been great too since they relate to them so well. I have never had a bad experience here!

We have had two assessments with Marie and we could not recommend her and the team more. We were treated with kindness and a genuine desire to understand the situation in order to provide the best guidance and support. Importantly, my son felt welcomed and at ease during both assessments (which were about 7 years apart). The reports reflect both care and a wealth of knowledge that have been like a healing balm.
We will be forever grateful!

Nicola was very helpful and so much more was achieved in 40 minutes than we received from Speech Therapy at Greenlane Hospital. She gave us some homework to do , concentrating on one particular area which is fun and it only takes a few minutes at a time which makes it easy to repeat several times during the day. We look forward to seeing Nicola again and to hear the improvements in my husbands speech.

Frequently asked questions about speech therapists in Auckland

What qualifications do speech therapists in Auckland have?

Speech therapists in Auckland typically hold a Master's degree in Speech-Language Therapy or a related field. They are required to be registered with the New Zealand Speech-Language Therapists' Association (NZSTA) and often complete ongoing professional development to stay current with the latest practices and research in the field.

What services do speech therapists provide?

Speech therapists offer a variety of services, including assessment and treatment of speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders. They work with individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly, helping with conditions such as articulation disorders, stuttering, and language delays. They also provide support for individuals with neurological conditions that affect communication.

How do I know if my child needs a speech therapist?

Parents may consider seeking a speech therapist if their child exhibits signs of communication delays, such as difficulty pronouncing words, limited vocabulary, or challenges in understanding and following directions. If a child struggles to engage in conversations or is not meeting typical speech milestones, it may be beneficial to consult a speech therapist for an evaluation.

What can I expect during a speech therapy session?

During a typical speech therapy session, the therapist will conduct assessments to identify the specific challenges the client faces. How long does speech therapy usually take?

The duration of speech therapy varies widely depending on the individual’s specific needs and goals. Some clients may see significant progress in a few sessions, while others may require months or even years of therapy. The speech therapist will work with the client to establish a treatment plan that outlines the expected duration and frequency of sessions based on their progress.

Are speech therapy services covered by health insurance?

Many health insurance plans in New Zealand provide coverage for speech therapy services, but the extent of coverage can vary. It is important for individuals to check with their specific insurance provider regarding benefits and limitations related to speech therapy services. Some clients may also be eligible for government funding or subsidies for therapy.

Can adults benefit from speech therapy?

Yes, adults can significantly benefit from speech therapy. Therapy can address a range of issues, including communication challenges resulting from stroke, brain injury, or other neurological conditions. Adults may also seek therapy for voice disorders or to improve public speaking skills. The therapist will create a personalized program to meet the unique needs of adult clients.

How do I choose the right speech therapist in Auckland?

Choosing the right speech therapist involves considering factors such as the therapist's qualifications, areas of expertise, and approach to therapy. It can be helpful to read reviews and seek recommendations from other healthcare professionals. Scheduling a consultation can also allow potential clients to gauge the therapist's compatibility and communication style.

What is the difference between a speech therapist and a speech pathologist?

The terms speech therapist and speech pathologist are often used interchangeably; both refer to professionals who assess and treat communication and swallowing disorders.
