Customer Reviews
I’ve been a loyal HOYTS customer for years, but my recent experience at Sylvia Park was incredibly disappointing and has left a bad taste in my mouth—literally and figuratively.

On April 13, 2025, I attended a movie with friends and used 4,000 HOYTS points to purchase a large Mountain Dew. What I received tasted like plain soda water—completely flavorless. I brought the full drink to the manager after the movie, who acknowledged the issue, took a photo of the transaction, and promised to refund the points. That never happened.

I followed up by phone the following week—still nothing. I raised it again in person weeks later, only to be told they couldn’t help without a transaction number. All I have is a screenshot from my HOYTS account showing the points were used. That should be enough.

This wasn’t just a bad drink—it was bad customer service, poor follow-through, and a complete lack of accountability. The manager who made the promise never followed through, and no one else seems willing to help.

I love going to the movies, but this experience has made me seriously reconsider where I spend my time and money. HOYTS, you need to do better.

Nice movie theater, parking is something you need to allow extra time to find if you have not been there before.

It was my 1st time going to Sylvia park and it was NOT a single big lot but many smaller parking lots…

Would go back again, was nice that all seats in the Lux was recliner seats.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best experience. The movie theater seats could have been cleaner, and there was a technical issue with the film that caused a 20-minute delay. Additionally, our food order took over half an hour to arrive.”

I came out last night for Late Night Thursday. The movie was not bad and the seats were clean. However where is the manager!? Waited 10-15mins in line. There was ONLY 1 staff at the counter last night, fending for herself. She was sweet but too slow and overwhelmed by the line. There were 2 male staffs chatting away by the entrance of the cinema to check/rip your tickets before you go in. They saw her overworked but did not come to her rescue. Super lazy and should just go home if you’re not planning to work & help as a team. After my movie was over, there appeared to be now 2 staffs at the counter. Why weren’t they there when there was a line of people waiting… Please have a staff meeting with them, I know they’re young but they need guidance and proper training. Check your security cameras, you’ll know what I mean.

Came for a movie at a non peak hour to find the staff at the bar counter very grumpy and unpleasant. Banged into me leaving me with a sore shoulder. Walked into Lux to find the coffee tables dirty, trash left behind..given it’s only 10:30am.. totally unacceptable for a luxury experience. Seats in the cinema were dirty, popcorn strewn around.. wonder if there’s any cleaning done? Would have expected better especially at Hoyts!

While the movie was great the state of the cinema was revolting. It had not been cleaned before we arrived as we walked in there was popcorn all over the floor. When we got to our seats there was chewing gum in the cupholder, half eaten boxes of popcorn on our booked seats, along with empty coke bottles. Absolutely disgusting would be nice if the theatre was cleaned between movies so it didn’t feel as so you were sitting in a rubbish bin for 2 hours.

“Auckland’s Quietest Cinema Adventure – Event Cinemas Queen Street”

Hidden in the heart of Auckland’s CBD is a cinema with major “ghost town” vibes and I mean that in the most peaceful way possible. Event Cinemas Queen Street sits atop what feels like a semi-retired mall where the echo of your footsteps might be louder than the crowd. Perfect for introverts and movie lovers who hate lines.

Getting to the cinema is like playing a game of mall hide-and-seek. multiple entrances, escalators, and that one suspiciously quiet corridor that still somehow gets you there. But once inside, you’re rewarded with comfy sofas, friendly staff, and a warm cup of overpriced cinema coffee while you wait.

Popcorn? Check. Sodas? Bubbling. Tickets? Easy.
Toilets? Clean and big enough to do yoga… but be ready for a mini walk and hike.

Bonus points: Arrive early and you can bowl downstairs or destroy some aliens in the gaming lounge at the basement while waiting for the movie. Great for groups, dates, or solo adventures when your social battery is low but your film craving is high.

“Logan was here for the movie, stayed for the maze. Found the toilet, eventually.”

I actually think Queen St is one of the best cinemas in Auckland, if not the best from what I have visited.

A few years ago, this venue undertook a complete overhaul in all 12 theatres but somehow missed IMAX. Since then, prices have increased significantly but it is a much better experience as a result.

Cinemas 1-6 are the larger cinemas which can be found on one level, three of which now have reclining chairs. Also on that level are the two gold class theatres which improve the experience even more.

Cinemas 7-12 are on the top level and are smaller. These rooms all have standard chairs but honestly, they are extremely comfortable and luxurious. Rooms 9 and 10 are way too small for my liking but the rest are fine.

Toilets are still a major problem as there is only one cubicle if you are a male, which can be found on level 4. It is old but again, so is the building. Hygiene levels are a major disappointment as far as the bathrooms are concerned.

The ticketing area remains on level 3 and this has not really changed much. However, I am not complaining. I cannot really comment on prices for food and drink as I do not really order it.

The entire building is unfortunately run down and closed off due to the impacts of COVID but the cinema has survived luckily.

Besides the expensive prices for cinema tickets, especially recliners and gold class, I highly recommend EVENT Cinemas Queen St. I would say it is one of the best in Auckland since the renovations.

I like this cinema because it’s quiet and never really busy. The building is almost die, no activity except for thise cinema and some other shops.
They have about 12 cinemas and 2 floors.
We chose the recliners sitting and enjoyed Thai movie “How to make millions before grandma dies.”
It was a very nice simple movie with a very good moral. It’s good to watch that with teenagers.

The worst popcorn of my life! $14 for a completely inedible bucket! How is this our only IMAX theatre in NZ??? not to mention the imax wall has two dirty/different coloured squares that were obvious and distracting throughout the movie.

The guys in the food counter are really rude and they don’t even say a word when they pass you the drink! (The guy just looked at me in the eye and put my drink on the counter without saying a word). The staff here seems so miserable and irritated somehow.

Awesome Cinema and the cleanest I have ever been to. The V Lux Lounge seats (leather lazy boys) were so comfy and clean and nicely spaced in pairs. The screen and sound system was on point and really mode you feel part of the movie. The staff are friendly and helpful. The popcorn was a tad too salty for my liking. This is a large cinema complex spaced over multiple stories with a rocket ship lift . They also have Gold Class.
It would be even better when the refreshment stand (drinks/snacks) outside cinema 2 re open so you can get more drinks quickly, otherwise you have a bit of walking to do to get more snacks.
Mia P (☆ 5/5)
Mia P (☆ 5/5)
IMAX was relatively underwhelming. For what is supposed to be the best cinema screen, I found it pretty much the same as a VMAX screen at my local cinema. Perhaps it creates the illusion it’s better because it’s so close to your face (almost so close that it is not enjoyable because you almost unscrew your head turning back and forth).

The seats are also incredibly close together and cramped. At least the ticket was only $12 as it was a replay of Interstellar.

Staff were nice enough – although got a bit flustered trying to figure out our change when paying in cash.

The Event building/area itself was difficult to find and looked like it was about to fall apart.

Customer Reviews
Event Cinemas Manukau has been a staple in South Auckland for years, and while it still delivers on the core promise of showing all the latest movie releases, it’s clear the cinema has seen better days. The building itself feels quite dated—everything from the carpets to the seating gives off an old-school vibe, and not in a nostalgic way. It’s functional, sure, but lacks the modern polish and sleek design you’ll find at other Event Cinemas locations like Newmarket or Queen Street. The signage is tired, the lighting is dim, and even the foyer area feels a bit neglected.

That said, it does have most of the blockbusters and a decent range of session times, which is a big plus for local moviegoers. There’s usually not a huge crowd, so getting tickets is easy and you often have plenty of seat choices. The snack bar offers all the usual cinema treats, though the prices feel steep considering the surroundings haven’t been upgraded in years. The bathrooms and general facilities are serviceable but could really benefit from a refresh.

In terms of comfort, the seats are okay but nowhere near as plush or spacious as the recliners in newer Event Cinemas. Don’t expect any luxury options like Gold Class or V-Max here—it’s more of a no-frills, grab-your-popcorn-and-go experience. Staff are generally friendly and helpful, though the overall vibe of the place feels a bit run-down.

If you’re nearby and just want to catch a movie without driving into the city, Event Cinemas Manukau does the job. But if you’re looking for a top-tier cinema experience with all the modern bells and whistles, you’re better off heading elsewhere. It’s overdue for a renovation, and until that happens, it’ll remain the go-to by default—not by choice.

The staff were friendly and polite, the man who served us at the counter helped us choose some seats. Lots of games in the arcade here too like Guitar Hero, Time Crisis, Tekken 7, a lot of crane machines and a dance machine plus others. I won a Kuromi toy from one of the machines had such a fun time here.

Shame on the Event Cinema Manukau franchise… we had a movie booked in the dodgy corner Cinema 9. At the entrance we could smell urine from the adjacent toilets, the seats were broken and numbers missing and gaping hole where the drink holder on the seat once existed!!! The screen was so small like in the 1970s!! Even 3rd world countries must have better maintained halls…it’s time current management sold it to other buyers who know the first rule of customers and service. I’m sure the place will have creepy crawlers and rodents too. The escalators are sticky and yucky. Avoid and watch a movie at home rather than sit in someone else dirt and eating stale the Choc-top’ icecream they sell. I challenge the owners of this cinema to have the guts to host our Mayor or maybe even our PM in cinema 9!!!

me and my partner took her little sister (5years old) and my niece (7 years old) . When purchasing our tickets and food we headed upstairs to take photos of her sister and my niece . My partner then noticed a lady running towards us frightening my niece and partners little sister . Tbh had to calm my partner down because she literally ran up to us demanding we show her our tickets and we weren’t allowed to just take photos upstairs without. Manukau Event do better .

I had a great experience at Gold Class in Event Cinemas Albany. The lounge is beautiful and sets the mood for a relaxing night. The seats are extra big, super comfortable, and come with a personal table—perfect for enjoying the movie in comfort. I really appreciated the friendly staff; they were helpful and knew exactly what was gluten-free, which made ordering easy. The nachos were delicious—hot, cheesy, and great for movie snacking. I also loved the food and drink service during the movie—it was smooth and didn’t disturb the experience at all. Highly recommend for a special night out!

Lots of parking nearby, coffees, restaurants, good thing it’s inserted inside of a big mall so you can shop around before watching your movie.

Only drawback is I bought a hotdog and it got re-heated on a microwave or something and when I started eating it had the consistency of a chewing gum.

Not nice if you think about how overpriced food usually is at cinemas…I would at least expect it to be good

Went to see alien at cinema 1 but the movie is not scary at all compare to the cinema environment. The smell is really bad and rubbish everywhere on the ground.
The most scary thing is the seat. I smell shit on the seat before I seated. It made me sick and almost throw up. Obviously someone shit on the seat and not cleaned much. The whole cinema need to be renovated otherwise I really encourage everyone NOT to go there!!

Today, I lost my visa card and another important card that slipped under the seat. It was very hard to pull it out, i asked an employee where I could get help, knowing she was busy, so I only asked where to go for assistance. Unfortunately, she told me to go to the next line and didn’t offer help. In the end, I had to struggle on my own to pull it out from under the seat, and my hand got scratched. There was no one at the information desk either. It was a very frustrating experience, and I hope the staff can be more attentive in the future.

I had high expectations for Hoyts Lux, especially since it was my first visit and my boyfriend had shared great things about his past experiences. Unfortunately, this visit was a letdown for both of us.

While the reclining seats had potential, the experience was ruined when I accidentally touched something slimy on the side of my seat — definitely unhygienic and unpleasant. We pressed the service button twice, but no one ever came. My boyfriend had to leave the movie to get snacks, only to find out that food service was no longer available.

Overall, it was a disappointing night, and we won’t be returning. I’m giving 2 stars solely because the staff we did interact with were friendly.

Great customer service here. Took my infant to the Pram N Pix session today to watch Mission Impossible- The Final Reckoning, and what an amazing experience.

The Xtreme screen features recliner seats and a big screen. 5 star ⭐️ for cleanliness.

Only one feedback to consider would be to turn the lights off completely so that we can watch the movie without the glare of the lights. Luckily this time the lights were turned off part way through the movie and it was better for us. A bonus for me is that my baby slept until the end.

Overall had a good time today at Hoyts Botany.

lux is not what it used to be, other than the price they charge (over valued) food service is cut off early, staff try to upsell even when you decline, of course everything is ridiculously over priced but at least you had special treatment for your money before, now, it’s just not a special outing or event. you are better off staying at home and watching online.

Our girls’ night out with my daughters was a blast this evening. After dinner at Nando’s (Botany Town Centre), we made the short walk to Hoyts Cinema. We didn’t have to do much, just activated our order – already placed online prior – and picked it up when we got there and headed right into the cinema. The movie was a blast, especially for my girls who adore Demon Slayer. Definitely recommend Hoyts if you’re in the area and have to choose what to do or even which cinema to pass the time on an evening alone or out with friends. They are straightforward and very polite with their service. Otherwise, you can do everything online or on their app

I had a terrible experience at Hoyts Botany (Screen 4, 9 PM session). The air conditioning was off the entire time, making the theater uncomfortably warm, despite multiple complaints. To make things worse, the movie only played on half the screen, ruining the viewing experience. For the price of a ticket, I expected much better. Definitely not coming back unless they improve their service and maintenance.

Interesting experience as a first timer at Monterey. Ordered two coffees which were left at the end of the counter, no calling out the order or bringing them over (it wasn’t busy so easy to remember who we were). Went to find out where our coffees were after 10 minutes to find no one at the counter, even with a line forming for people wanting to buy tickets. Movie was supposed to start at 3.20pm, by 3.35, people in the cinema were very confused why nothing was playing on the screen yet. I went out to again, find no one at the counter and had to basically walk into their office to get some attention. Finally, after another 10 minutes, the movie started. Overall just an odd experience, the girls were young so maybe just inexperienced to customer service roles, may be in need of a retraining for some.

Movie: Better Man @ 3.20pm 25/01/25

Went to see Nosferatu with friends and the place was immaculate. Staff are friendly and the vibe is calm which we loved.
Id say the only drawback is the lack of air-conditioning in the cinema. Nosferatu was a 2 hour movie and it became unbearably hot and stuffy about half way through

Please crank up the AC during movies , the little theatres heat up really quickly and can become a distraction from the movie..

First time I’ve been to the cinema in years!!
Nice layout, spacious entrance with seating etc even a bar 🙂 awesome arcade area. The staff were great, spoke to a very nice young lady, was very pleasant. The seats are actually very comfortable and have a nice armrest!! Enjoyed the whole experience

Beautiful venue, comfortable modern seating, staff were very pleasant and friendly. My only complaint is that the sound of the movie was far too loud, even sitting towards the rear and as someone who has hearing loss, so I can’t imagine how loud it must have been for the others. It was a beautiful movie, but the volume took away from that. Next time, I will pack something to put in my ears just in case.

Update Oct2019: They have upgraded the cinemas with new seats etc, this also resulted in overall ticket price increase to $15!!!…. $10 per ticket no longer available. Still good service and ample parking spaces. You c an always get a ticket even if arriving late. Time Zone game centre is of good values and game varieties.

Great values, good services. $10 per ticket per individual, ample parking out front. Plenty cafe and places to eat nearby. First session in the morning are often less crowded.

Enjoyed Oceans doco with David Attenborough as narrator. Eye opening experience to witness actual footage of commercial vessels who only meet demands of humanity’s need to consume seafood at the cost of mother earth devastation & ignorance to protect our oceans & seabed for future generations to come! If our oceans die so does all humanity! Everyone needs to understand we need to know about these occurrences & stop destruction now before it’s too late! One world one race we are all custodians of planet earth

Excellent cinema experience always. The staff is very nice and friendly. There is so much parking around and the best part is $10 movie tickets. The screens are decent size and the seating in comfortable. Its usually not too crowded and quiet easy to get tickets. Highly recommended.

Great place to catch a movie. I was here with 2 of my not so tiny tots. They had good fun watching the movie and playing in the timeout area. Tickets are $10 each which is cheapest but also what the standard needs to be. We watched avengers end game and while the facilities are old, they are not terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the opposite. Great place and keeps up with the newer and more modern event cinemas.

Charming local cinema. It was part of the french flim festival and very busy, with queues stretching out the door for tickets, food, and drinks. The seats weren’t the most comfortable, but it didn’t take away from the experience, we still really enjoyed our movie date.

it’s old but all good. prices not as low as Lido but whatever. we showed up 15mins prior to the movie and there was a huge line out the door on the footpath, by the time we’d missed 10mins of the movie, we left. maybe don’t time the movies so close together? i’ve liked it here before when i’ve actually made it to the ticket counter.

The Bridgeway is great, and even though we live in Westmere is still only 7 minutes to get to outside peak hours. However, after 7 pm the snack stock is very limited, in particular ice cream in a cone and pop corn. Also, the staff serving seem stressed and not always customer focussed and it seems there is not enough staff to cover peak times. This is not enough to stop me going, however it might put others off, hence my review.

This is our ‘go to’ cinema. We’ve found the online booking system good, ice creams good and helpful staff. The lift is well used for those who struggle with stairs. More disability parking would be a bonus

The Bridgeway is a real gem and our local boutique cinema. It offers a far more intimate and enjoyable experience compared to the larger multiplexes. The selection of films is limited but always interesting, often showcasing a great mix of mainstream hits and more independent or arthouse titles.

We took our 3 year old to Newmarket Rialto cinema yesterday to watch the Minecraft movie. After purchasing our tickets, ice creams and drinks we went into the cinema. A little while later, the manager came into the cinema to let us know that if the movie was a bit too scary for our son, we could exit within the first half hour for a full refund. During this interaction, our son also decided to inherit my choc top ice cream. The manager then left us to it only to return a few minutes later with a new choc top ice cream for me, which was on the house. We have never experienced such first class service at any cinema anywhere, so am providing a very deserving shout out here.

I have never once left a review but honestly I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this experience. Me and my partner went to the movies on Friday night for a date night. We ran out of time to grab a meal beforehand so decided to just eat at the cinemas. We ordered a $20 “carnivore” pizza and they told us to come back out in 20 minutes and it would be ready. 20 minutes passed and I came out shocked as to what was waiting for me – I had to ask what it was as I initially assumed they messed it up. But no, it was the one we ordered: A cold, small very thin tortilla, with 4 pieces of meat, cheese, and 2 olives that had been chopped up. We were too hungry at this point to bother taking it back and by the time the movie finished there wasn’t any staff around. I have honestly just never been so shocked. Sure, inflation and what not – but that is just daylight robbery. Definitely ruined the experience.

Only go here if a movie isn’t on elsewhere – no heating, cold, generally 15 min. of adverts, the side lights in the cinema are intrusive, ice-cream almost melts before you reach your seat ……

Very tired and run down cinemas. The side lights in the cinema are intrusive, the aircon rattled away noisily the whole time, plus we had to sit through 20 mins of adverts beforehand (not trailers – adverts!). Not a pleasant movie-going experience.

Wicked the movie itself was 10/10, however this cinema is a 2/10. The side lights were super bright and flickering the whole time, I informed the manager about this, but he said “that’s how low they dim but I’ll fix it”
Nothing came out of this and It’s not a pleasant experience especially for people with sensory issues.
It was highly distracting and the popcorn was stale.
