Absolutely fantastic business with a great operating model. Love the extensive collection of books in stock to order from, and the speed at which orders are processed… plus really competitive prices. The pick-up option is super handy! Really great, knowledgeable and friendly staff! Will definitely be making many more purchases from this team! My wallet is already weeping! 😀
Venushka Perera (☆ 5/5)

I highly recommend Book Heros. They provide me with not only the box set that I wanted, “A court of thorns & roses” but also provided amazing quick , easy & amazing value! My new Hero ❤️ AAA+
Jackie Vipond (☆ 5/5)

Great website for ordering local. I ordered on a Tuesday night and the book was on my door step on Thursday morning. Really great service from the team when I emailed about a price match.
The only thing I’d say is that when I’m searching for books it would be great if you could filter by size. I’m a weirdo that doesn’t like Mass Market Paperback size. Whether it’s soft or hard cover I like them around the same size. Will make the book search less time consuming to have that information.
Otherwise great service!
Aidan Jarvis (☆ 5/5)

Wonderful!! A very extensive collection of books that could outdo any other shop around NZ.
The website is very clean and easy to use.
Prices are extremely competitive, I am so so impressed.
Ordered on a Friday, received on Tuesday (two of five are backorder, which I received an email to explain when I could expect them!)
I will be placing many more orders!!!!
Alyssa Bryant (☆ 5/5)

Marissa Smith (☆ 5/5)

Super impressed with the speed of delivery – ordered at 3pm Tuesday, and arrived the next day to the south! Unfortunately my books were damaged but the team were so helpful and apologetic, I didn’t expect to receive a replacement of my entire order! Super well priced, an awesome team and will happily purchase from them again ☺️
Esther Kelly (☆ 5/5)

I’m giving this review after placing my first order with Book Hero. The website is well set out and easy to use. The pricing is most reasonable and competitive. The books arrived well packed and in just two days from order to delivery to my PO Box in central Auckland. Kudos for the excellent interface with the NZPO app for order tracking. I’ll definitely be placing further orders.
Best wishes for success in your business.

A gorgeous bookstore with the best range of books in Auckland!
There are so many great queer, philosophy, and Japanese contemporary fiction for me, and there’s always something new to check out. Whatever you’re into – they should have at least a few books for it!
The atmosphere of the store is fantastic. It’s very peaceful, but still very inspiring.
I also love their loyalty card system.
Danielle Peck (☆ 5/5)

Lots of interesting things in here.
The only negative feedback I wish to share is that it irritates me when I want to buy a greeting card: I want to look at the cards & ponder, which is difficult when you have to stand right in the doorway. This position does not lend itself to considered card buying or showing the intended card to shopping partner, so I usually go elsewhere.
Sophia (☆ 3/5)

A wonderful selection, extremely helpful staff. The children’s selection is extraordinary. Lots of local authors, Maori culture. I always buy more than expected. Books make great gifts. Get gift certificates online or can get paper ones to use in store. Buy more books!
Barbara K (☆ 5/5)

A haven for all bookworms could spend hours in the shop. Staff are courteous and efficient, and the selection of books is vast and captivating… priced reasonably; last purchase was Paul Sedir Occult Botany for $100.
Love this shop
SL N (☆ 5/5)

This is my first book store in Auckland and my favorite one too. Love the ambience, the books, the categories, the service, everything about it. Made a few purchases and will be back again!
Sarah Nanayakkara (☆ 5/5)

It’s the king of the Auckland inner-city bookshops for a reason! Too small for all the books and ideas packed inside, but at the same time an absolute treasure trove of interesting, well-curated titles in every topic under the sun with helpful staff and there is no way I can get out without collecting another haul.
So good. Go support physical local shops! Amazon can’t curate like these guys, and the chain stores don’t cater for how smart you are.
Andrew Johnson (AJ) (☆ 5/5)

The book selection is pretty good. Unfortunately, the experience is seriously let down by the staff. From the moment you walk in, you’re met with cold stares, as if your presence is suspicious. Questions are met with short, dismissive answers, and the whole attitude feels more like you’re being monitored than welcomed.

Would not recommend selling books here.
I phoned hard to find books to reserve an appointment with the buyer, as this is what is advised on the website. Upon arrival the buyer wasn’t available so I decided to stay for a few minutes until she had arrived back.
10 minutes had gone by and I decided to leave the books with the receptionist as she said they could get back to me within 1-2 days with a price to buy my books.
4 days had passed by and i had not heard anything back from them. I decided to give them a call to ask if there was any updates as i was told they’d get back to me in 1-2 days. The lady over the phone was extremely short and explained to me that they were short staffed. I understood this and was okay for her to get back to me on a price. Instead she said she will ‘quickly go through them now’ and after around 2 mins she said she could give me $15 for 7 art books that were worth a hell of a lot more.
I have still not received this $15 after 2 weeks. I decided to sell with them because I liked the idea of them going to somewhere where they will be looked after, but instead I was met with rude and aggravating behaviour. I also had to get these books gone quick as i am moving overseas.
Lovely place to look for books, but don’t bother selling them here.
Charlie Stringer (☆ 1/5)

Magical place ✨ Left with a Tarot deck and a lovely book. Lady at the front desk was nice and so welcoming. Too bad we visited not so long before the close time. If you’re a book person or tend to immerse yourself in museums/exhibitions for hours, consider spending a whole day here. Enjoy some reading here and take some babies home with you would be a satisfying weekend escape!
Yuanling Liang (☆ 5/5)

My friend dragged me there. But it was really amazing. It looks vintage to me and great place for photos too
Coco Yumiko (☆ 5/5)

It was so lovely meeting you today Shalon (Auckland store). You have helped make a stressful time for my family so much easier. It is great that you came to us to buy, and take the books straight away.
I will be in touch when I find more books!
Catherine Marnoch (☆ 5/5)

Can easily spend half a day here just browsing the fiction room (which doesn’t include scifi, horror and YA/children’s rooms!). The collection can be overwhelming but they’re properly categorized. They have Folio Society editions for 25nzd!

Honoka Ito (☆ 5/5)

Quaint secondhand bookshop in Grafton. Huge selection & good prices. Very organised and everything is tucked away in its own little section. Only downside is inaccessibility – only way in is stairs and it is quite narrow inside, would probably not fit prams/wheelchairs.

This is a lovely little independent bookstore with a great selection, would have loved to buy more if my suitcase wasn’t already creaking. Got a gorgeous little field guide to the Fungi of New Zealand. The staff member who rang up my order was really nice to chat to

My local bookstore always sells good books.
You can also order them at the counter if you can’t find what you are looking for and it will arrive quit quickly.
Love it.
Sarisa Nasinprom (☆ 5/5)

This is one of those special indie bookstores that you go to just for fun. The selection here is amazing, particularly for fiction (though they also have an extensive range of non-fiction, too!). Their rewards programme is really good, too – I think better than any other local or chain bookstore.
Danielle Peck (☆ 5/5)

The team are always helpful and super knowledgeable. Great vibe and feel to the place. I especially love the recommendation cards where team members write up their mini reviews – often with fun additional artwork flourishes. If the book you want isn’t there or if you’ve got a hard to find book, the team will do their best to track it down and order it for you.
Stuart (☆ 5/5)

Recommend! Lovely staff always helping out. You can also order most books through them. Always new books. Turnover of books is quite fast, so if you want it you should probably get it when you see it.

My favorite book store! Great selection, and if anything happens to be unavailable they order it in super fast. The staff is very kind and helpful and I love that this book store is open until 21:00.
Maria Dinu (☆ 5/5)

Lovely little bookstore in the Mt Eden village. A reasonable coverage of fiction and non fiction books. They also sell branded greeting cards. There is a children’s book section as well with both picture book and fiction for young adults. Please check out their specials which are great value for money!

Very tidy inside the store and out. Got two glue sticks. I just wanted to say that strangely, a man just happened to call me a “mam” two times when it’s common sense I’m not female . I’ve never had anyone call me a girl before this is the first time.
William Chen (☆ 4/5)

Nice store. Well stocked, spacious and friendly staff. I was looking for quality notebooks and ballpoint pens.
They had good options for each.
Sandeep (Saap) (☆ 5/5)

Excellent book choice and wide range of stationery. Lots of children toys and games. Also Educational material. You can spend hours in the shop.
Drienie de Ridder (☆ 5/5)

I queued up following others, but when it was my turn, I was told this was not the correct line and was directed to another one. Assuming I had made a mistake, I immediately moved to the new line. However, after I left, the cashier proceeded to serve the people behind me. When I inquired about this, my concerns were completely ignored. This experience left me feeling both frustrated and disappointed, especially as I had my child with me. The staff here are extremely rude and unprofessional…
Tina Wang (☆ 1/5)

Great selection of books but would be good to have some Seating readily available in store while considering books
Jane Fasavalu (☆ 4/5)

We were picking out books to purchase when a staff member came out to accuse our three year old of standing on books. At the time she was sitting beside my wife reading a book. We hadn’t seen her stand on any books and any books she took down to look at she returned neatly. But we said okay and promised we would ensure she doesn’t stand on any books. The employee continued to go on about other things our daughter was apparently doing, like sitting on the little step at the bottom of the book shelf to read. No matter how many times we said we understood and we would ensure it doesn’t happen again the employee continued to go on and on about it. We promptly left and returned the $200 worth of books we’d picked out to purchase. We often like going to book stores and looking through the books to choose which ones we’d like to take home but apparently whitcoulls botany doesn’t accommodate toddlers. Not a thing had been left out of place by us, so perhaps it was the fact we’d allowed our toddler to touch anything at all. Might pay to remember that toddlers also have a right to exist in a store and browse books as we adults are allowed to do. Not sure what the employee was trying to achieve continuing to rant at us. We went to another book store to make our purchases.
Josh Milne (☆ 1/5)

To the young woman that helped me today, I hope you had a great day as you definitely made my day. Thank you for finding the book I was after, your friendly customer service and smiling when I found it funny it was in the mind, body and spirit section.

Really cute book store. Lovingly curated with an interesting range. It’s a little chaotic inside which ads to the charm – you’ll find a few quirky objects and some cool displays. If you head down the corridor at the back you’ll find several more rooms and a gorgeous little secret garden where you can enjoy a cup or tea or coffee – it’s very much worth a visit. This is obviously a labour of love and could use more steady custom to elevate its offering – but I’ll bet they do some cool events and I’m looking forward to checking them out. Get in there and support the local community!

What a joy to stumble into this beautifully presented and welcoming space. The store attendant was gentle and helpful, really adding to the safe and welcoming space it holds. So happy to discover this gorgeous book store
Larissa Gates (☆ 5/5)

This environment was so welcoming and beautiful. There were so many rooms beautifully laid out. Great space for young and old.
Alma (☆ 5/5)

Fantastic book store! The books are in such great condition that they look new.
Several rooms, well organized, with signage to orient you through the store. In some days there is a coffee machine in the back that serves coffee and tea.
My favorite part of the store is the ” staff picks ” shelf. There is also a little garden with some seating in the back.
Staff are friendly. The only downside to this place is the parking, which can be a bit tough. I parked on a side residential street and walked a little bit.
Highly recommended. One of the best used book stores I’ve ever been to.
KP G (☆ 5/5)

This is a gorgeously cozy place. I love the homely yet library like feeling here. Spots to read, have some tea, and have a browse at an impressive collection of second-hand books. I love the mystery book option, it’s really creative and intriguing. The small business book marks are so cool too! I hope to visit often
Destiny Edwards (☆ 5/5)

I was looking for 4 books to send to pre-schoolers who are currently in the USA. I knew two titles I really wanted but couldn’t find them in any one shop, so would have had to pay two lots of postage. Then I recalled visiting Dorothy Butler’s shop with two children I cared for after school and how we loved going there. A quick search on their website, and voila, both books I wanted! And it was so easy to find two others from their fantastic selection. I received the books very quickly. Fabulous books. Fabulous service. Thank you!

Auckland’s finest children’s bookshop – always well stocked, filled with the best children’s books money can buy, with amazing staff who are always happy to help you find the right book with you.
The carparking is convenient but do be sure to visit the machine and pay for your parking; the building’s enforcement service is quite zealous.

I haven’t been to this book shop for years. My little girl is now 23 but I can see that it is still amazing. Instilling a love of reading from an early age is so important for your child’s future development and this children’s bookshop is the absolute best place for doing this. You and your kids will love it!!

Customer Reviews
I dropped by to buy Hangang’s books because they’re a bit cheaper than other bookshops. This bookstore not only has good quality books, but also stylish diaries and pens. As expected from a uni bookshop, it has the magic of making me dream of achieving my goals.

Useless to deal with when having to buy school books etc online. When you call in and also need to pick up another book, they make it very difficult. Hopefully there is somewhere else you can get the books from. ** In response to the owner’s question; The issue is the website stated some books were out of stock so an order was not placed as we believed they were available in the shop. On entering the shop, the books were physically in the shop, but could only be purchased online and also could not be supplied straight away. There was no hold for other customers on the books so the books could have been supplied, but the ‘system’ would not allow this. Not what I call customer service.

Been shopping here for years, but it has really gone downhill since they closed the downstairs section. The store layout is very uninviting now, and it only stocks a tiny, unremarkable selection of very overpriced books. You can do much better elsewhere in Auckland or online from overseas.

The store is pretty small but has the requisite selection of classics, reference, text books, new releases and tons of works by local authors and about local subject matter. I do like the stationery section, although I find that Typo is more value for money.
The book subscription service is pretty cool too, and they tailor the books they send you according to your tastes. Personally, I didn’t find it very useful because I just wasn’t reading that much anymore.

This place is great for any last-minute stationery requirements, quirky gifts, textbooks/coursebooks, and just generally interesting reading material. Be warned: the line for coursebook collection is nightmarish around the start/middle of the year before semesters- they offer an online ordering service to avoid the queue.
Staff are friendly and helpful. The store is also wheelchair accessible.

Do not order from them online. Fine in person, online experience has been horrible. Textbook took over a month to come (after I ordered because it said it was in stock on the website only to be told by them when I enquired that they hadn’t updated the website and it wasn’t in stock). Not only that, I finally get the brand new textbook and it’s damaged.
Like said, they’re a fine store in person. But my online experience has been horrible.

Might be the best secondhand bookshop I’ve been to, at least in terms of ambience: stock is pretty good too. Its certainly nice to sit in the garden out the back of this lovely villa, sipping the complimentary coffee, whilst reviewing one’s finds.
